Garrett puts River Redgum in the conservation spotlight -BARMAH CAMPAIGN LAUNCH
Barmah Campaign LaunchThe Victorian National Parks Association (VNPA) launched their new River Red gum campaign on the Murray River at Echuca recently.

President of the Australian Conservation Foundation Peter Garrett joined Yorta Yorta elders and the VNPA to release the ‘River Red Gum Forests’ brochure and to officially launch the campaign.

Mr Garrett said that one of Australia’s greatest environmental challenges is to protect and restore the Murray River and the plants and animals that depend on it: “This year governments including those of NSW, Victoria and the Commonwealth will decide on options to increase flows to the Murray – only the 1500 gigalitre option will give the Murray any chance of health.” He said. VEAC RED GUM STUDY -reccommendations released

The Goulburn Valley environment Group (GVEG) has today welcomed draft
recommendations for the protection of threatened species and wetlands in a
new Barmah National Park and Lower Goulburn National Park.

The recommendations also call for the first ever Indigenous Cooperatively
managed parks in Victoria at Barmah, in what GVEG believe to be a great step
for reconciliation.

"We are delighted that these areas will be protected and managed for future
generations" GVEG President Dr Doug Robinson said today "Particularly in the
context of climate change and reduced water availability"

The Victorian Environmental Assessment Council also recommends significant
quantities of environmental water for floodplain wetlands of the Goulburn
and Murray Rivers

"GVEG recognises the great economic benefits of National Parks to regional
towns and communities, and sees great opportunities for recreation, tourism
and nature based activities within our region. The new parks will allow
horse riding and other vehicular access which we commend"

GVEG encourages all interested local people to get involved and have a say
during the 60 day submission period by going to www.veac.vic.gov.au
