Season 1
Episode 4
Producers: Michael Jenkins &
Peter Schreck
Director: Ana Kokkinos
Written by: Tony Morphett & David Ogilvy
First aired 7th August, 2002.
This episode had the continuing story arc
of Guido and whether he's a corrupt cop. This is interesting considering
he was the one investigating Eddie and corruption allegations.
We start out with the usual recap clips
before we are introduced to Det. Donna Parry's brother Kenny - straight off the
bus from Beringarah. He's in town for an apparent routine medical check
up. Donna didn't mention to Eddie that her brother was handicapped - Eddie
suggested their meeting was what he termed the "Kenny test." She
refuses to answer, but through musing's and the usual VO pov style, we learn
that Eddie was correct.
Case load for the episode, child porn downloaded onto computers at a private
school. Eddie and Donna head out to investigate. Donna is not
perturbed by the school administration who want to sweep it under the carpet.
There are supposedly only three people with keys to the room where the computers
are, but Eddie seems rather focused on Josef - the school
gardener/cleaner. Donna doesn't share his theories.
Donna gets a phone call to go and see her brothers doctor.
Cameron is wanting to go to Inspector Kostas after Guido is nearly run down in
the street whilst getting food. Cameron doesn't want to be "collateral
damage" as the people who are after Guido are getting closer. They
have a very up close and personal discussion about trust. (side note...
Guido doesn't seem to understand the concept of personal space - not that
Cameron seems to mind! Nope, wouldn't bother me either <g>)
All four detectives are called out to Huntingdale (the private school) when
Josef barricades himself inside after being assaulted. The school
dismisses him on what Donna believes is unreasonable grounds and she vows to get
to the bottom of it all.
Eddie believes Josef has been assaulting students. One student who had
left the school and a current student. The current student goes in defense
of Josef but the student who left suggests there was something going on at the
school. Josef's fiancée Catherine is questioned several times, but she is
unable or unwilling to provide any help. Josef refuses to answer questions
and it looks like Eddie may have been right regarding his guilt.
Guido lets Cameron into his secret world a little more when they have a
discussion about trust. He tells her about Sophia Rinaldi, and points out
again that he did not take the money the mob thinks he did. Cameron is
still angry that he won't tell her the full story... she knows he's holding
something back.
Meanwhile, Donna finds out her brother has a life threatening illness and his
lifespan is limited. She lashes out at Eddie when she thinks he told Kenny
about the illness, only to find out he had overheard her conversation with the
doctors. Kenny seems more settled with his fate than Donna, not wanting a
heart transplant that could save his life.
Josef comes forward, making a statement that the student who left was actually
sexually assaulted by senior students. He walked in on them in the
computer lab., and it is suspected they therefore had access to have been the
guilty party in downloading the child pornography.
In a dramatic ending, Guido is wounded when someone shoots him whilst at
home. He is determined to cover up this attempt on his life when Cameron
phones to invite him out for drinks with herself, Donna and Eddie.
It's wide open for this continuing story
arc next week!
Reviewer personal rating:
7 out of 10.
Oh wow!
The only thing that really jumped out at me was the shooting at the end of
the eppy. I enjoyed the eppy, but it seemed to be more about setting up
future plot lines. The foreboding with Cameron receiving the wreath and
then bang! Interesting plot development to lead in to the next eppy.
Did we really need... (or just me
being picky)
Over done... okay, Donna's brother has a handicap, but did they need to give
him a life threatening illness as well??
Quotes:
McGregor (setting out test papers): Look
I'm sorry... I have a class arriving for an examination.
Guido (picking up a paper and reading it): I couldn't answer any of these.
McGregor: It's for bright students.
